Dying hive and hive Beetles

Post by MCooke » Sat Jan 14, 2017 10:44 am

What would suggest to do with one of the our hives has no brood and is dying off and has been infected with hive beetle and moth as the bees cannot control them. Should I let the hive die out then destroy or what is the best suggestion I don't want it effecting our other hives.

I would immediately kill the hive using methylated spirits and seal tightly and leave in the sun - the fumes will kill everything. Also be sure to check for other diseases like AFB.

Once all insects are dead I would remove the frames and freeze them, and then try re-populating with a nucleus or wait until next season and fill it with a swarm.

Test it for American Foul Brood in order to be in compliance with the Law.
