My first swarm.

Post by Thomas » Sun Sep 27, 2015 11:48 pm

Got my first swarm today. One of my hives swarmed and was kind enough to land on a branch close to the ground in my front yard.

It was spread over 2 places on the tree. I got some in the box but a lot ended up on the ground. Luckily they liked the new home and after an hour most had moved in. Since it was in my front yard I left the hive there until after sundown and there wasn't a bee to be seen outside the box.

All-in-all a successful swarm retrieval, if not a very elegant one. :)

So I put the swarm in a box with 8 frames of foundation. I was wondering is this good enough for them? Should I add frames of honey or brood from another hive? Or should I feed them? Or are they best left on their own?

There is plenty of food around and they come with their bags packed full of Honey.
Best left to their own devices so that they concentrate on settling in and not lounging about eating sugar or sipping sugar water.

Thanks Jon, I expected as much. After all they don't get any help in the wild.

Two weeks on and they have certainly been busy. I gave them a hive body with 8 frames of foundation. I knew I was in trouble when I tried to take the lid off and all 8 frames wanted to come out too.

Did you have a hive mat on the top box?

To alleviate the comb building in the lid,

I put a new super on so hopefully that will keep them busy for a while. I was a bit unprepared for them to be so busy so quickly - the two swarms I got last year were no where near as active as this swarm.

And after tasting all that nice comb why would I ever use a hive mat? We will be eating comb for the next week!
