You are very sensible wanting to keep placid bees particularly if you are in town.

In general the bees in swarms are very placid for several weeks if not months after capture. After that it is a hit and miss affair. The swarm could be gentle and highly productive but could be otherwise. Then you might find it necessary to requeen.

Nucleus colonies from beekeeping suppliers or packages from queen breeders have new mated queens that are ready to lay and are bred for the gentle nature of their progeny, high productivity and lack of desire to swarm. But then again, there is no guarantee.

Thanks Dick. I did not realise the swarm can remain calm for a while after being put in the hive. That's very useful to know. I will keep my eye out for any swarms in the next few weeks. Russ

The key factor is that you can change the temperament of he hive by changing the queen so even a nasty swarm is only a temporary issue.

I don't need boxes, just the bees.

I am in Dickson.

Looking forward to hearing from you if you have a swarm or two needing a home.
