Are my bees about to swarm?

Post by RussAyres » Sat Feb 25, 2017 1:20 pm

Hi. I have a Kenyan Top Bar, which I only started November last year. I have noticed today that the bees are not foraging much and are clustering in the KTB wall, with relatively few bees on the comb. They have plenty of expansion space. I have not been able to spot the queen and can't see any queen cups for a new queen. Should I do anything or just watch and wait? Russ

If there are no swarm queen cells, they won't be swarming. The bees are quite unpredictable at the moment, the unusual spring and the arid summer has caused them to go into survival mode. The queens have slowed their laying because there is not much nectar around, hence the reduced foraging. There has been a late honey flow, so hang in there. Give it a few more weeks and by early April, you should be able to decide which way to go before winter.

Thanks Jon for the wise counsel. I will try to do a more thorough inspection today to see if I can spot the queen. I have not seen any queen cells at all. Russ
