I haven't gone foundationless yet but I looked into topbar hives and comb guides are recommended, at least in the books that I read. I doubt that the small amount of glue in the ply would have any effect on the bees. Its recommended that you coat the guide in beeswax so this would offer some buffer ...

My 3 hives are quite active on the warm days. We have some gum trees in the area that are flowering so there's some food around. They are quite active and eager to get out working in the morning.
